Under construction | Water mirror house

The relaxing power of a sheet of water when it is silhouetted against the sea is fascinating. A world of colors, reflections and textures appears in constant change that produces an enigmatic attraction. Sometimes this effect acquires a dimension that makes the rest of the elements that constitute a project are dispensable or accessory. Focused on this issue we begin the proposal to build a living space from which to contemplate a spectacular environment.

The place is located in Calpe and is delimited by four landscaping elements of great strength. To the north the rock of Ifach, to the east the Mediterranean Sea, to the south the Mascarat and to the west there is a distant view of the Sierra de Olta.

More info about this project here.

New project | Coimbra-Steinman

The house is located in the upper part of a field of a golf course with distant views towards the city of Lisbon.

The project arises in this case from the site. A topography that descends smoothly, a place where it can be built on a longitudinal surface with a triangular geometry. The wishes of their future owners also intervene, a house open to the landscape and simultaneously a more private space in which to enjoy the outdoors.

The project consists of updating a house with 400 square meters of living and 400 square meters of terrace space in the heart of the city, with a characteristic distribution of the valencian expansion district. This type of building with a high depth of block and central patios determines the possible layout, which responds to the functional requirements of the inhabitants of the house. Whitewashing, Enjalbegar in spanish, many languages have verbs that describe the action of lime painting the architectures to clean and embellish them. In this case it is about updating an apartment with a characteristic distribution of the Valencian expansion district. This type of buildings with a high depth of block and a small central courtyard determines the possible distributions. We approach this work in a systematic way, but here the action of whitewashing goes beyond the treatment of surfaces.

The new technical systems are integrated, the thermal and acoustic conditions are improved, the windows are changed, the necessary insulation is installed … The structure disappears between the divisions, inside the furniture to achieve the pleasant sensation of spatial continuity. Indirect linear lighting is integrated into the ceilings, the electrical boxes disappear in the cabinets … All the precise elements are designed with the same integration criteria, making them present only when they are necessary. The purification of constructive “accidents” maximizes spatial amplitude, facilitates cleaning and perhaps also life.

The program with two rooms makes the distribution simple. The bedrooms open to the block´s patio, the living room looks out over the main avenue, in the intermediate zone the distributor is transformed into a storage area and kitchen with a double circulation. Two filters materialized in sliding doors allow the apartment to function in several ways integrating the entrance space into the living room, dining room or kitchen depending on the desires of the user or the circumstances.

The project seeks to facilitate everyday life and promote a calm and awake perception of everything that happens in the inhabited space.

New project | Fababu House

A plot with steep slopes and rocky terrain are the starting point to plan the project.

The building emerges from the terrain forming three volumes that blend together, adapting to the topography of the place.

The hollows of the different pieces are born from the edges of each of the volumes interlacing one another and generating a system of holes that allows solving all the windows of the project.

This system produces shadows that give depth to the façade, making it possible to perceive from the exterior a mass, compact element, as if it were a rock, and from the inside the geometry of the holes and the terraces of each one of them. it helps to maximize the vision of the environment, but always without having visuals between the different rooms.

In turn, at the lowest level of the plot, the pool is located as a volume that emerges from the rock. At the top, at street level, the garage where the access to the plot is located is located.

On the access floor the main spaces of the house are housed: living room, dining room, kitchen, toilet, master bedroom and bathroom. Below, accompanying the topography are the rest of uses that the program required, which allows direct connection with the outside, with the pool and the pine forest that surrounds the plot.

Conference | Kansas City

Fran Silvestre will give a conference on April 26th in Kansas City, USA, where he will talk about the creative process of the studio Fran Silvestre Architects. The Valencian architect is currently a visiting professor at the Kansas State University, through the Victor L. Regnier Chair.

According to architecture critic and journalist David Cohn, “The designs transform the particulars of each building into simple schemes of expansive spatial relations, using a formal vocabulary of abstract lines, planes and, in certain cases, simple curves, in a rather Miesian idealization of Modernism. Silvestre’s works comprise a series of repetitions and variations on these spatial themes, which in their chronological development trace his growth as an architect, the expanding reach of his formal investigations, and the impact of adapting this formal repertoire to new problems and larger programs. […]  His art, for all its abstraction, is more about the problem at hand, and how to create a setting for daily life that lifts us out of the ordinary, and towards a more complete and awakened sensual engagement with our surroundings”. Fran Silvestre will reveal the most important values of the architecture firm and the methods used by the studio to achieve such innovative projects.

The conference will take place at the ‘Nelson Atkins Museum’, designed by renowned American architect Steven Holl. This is a free event, although tickets are required and can be purchased through the museum’s website.

Winners | Macrocomplex competition

The proposal is conceived as a system of aggregation, controlling its volume impact in the area and giving place to surprising spaces. This system is based on the Mat-Building, understood as a potentially infinite interior space which incorporates in its genetic matrix the idea of growth, diminution and change.
This way, the project starts from a basic form, made by the intersection of a circle and a square. This form keeps aggregating to itself, putting together an itinerary that allows the user to move around the different parts of the centre in a controlled manner, and once the route is over, to go back to the ground floor where the warehouse is located, to proceed to check-out.

New project | 1905 Office building

There is a distinct pleasure in restoring an old object. Let’s take for instance an old flexo, one of those that were used in the drawing tables of the technical offices. First, to understand it, disassemble it with care, clean the rusted parts, repaint it, chrome the elements that require so, replace the old cable with one that resists the new voltage and do the same with the lamp holder and the switch, search in unexpected places for a new coil to replace a damaged one. Intervening only where is necessary provides the object with a new life, thus displaying itself, a hundred years later, ready, as newly manufactured.
The same attitude was assumed in this building, which dates from 1905 and is a sample of the Valencian architecture of the early twentieth century. Located in the first expansion district of the city a, it was designed by the architect Antonio Martorell, considered as one of the most distinguished architects of his time. The objective was to transform the headquarters of a historic Valencian company that sought to renovate its facilities in order to adequate them to the technological changes experienced in recent years. The building was initially conceived as a residential building, although it was used as the headquarters of this company from the beginning.

New video | Guest Pavilion

The pavilion consists of two rooms: one bedroom and a living room with a kitchen. There are also two bathrooms, one serving the pavilion and the other one as a support for the pool. Within the premises, the aim is that the built piece minimizes its impact on the garden from the main house. This way, the pavilion is located approaching one of the limits of the land, perpendicular to the swimming pool, showing its slimmer and opaque side towards the existing architectures. In the other direction the piece is a passageway, relating to the landscaped space and a sort of courtyard between the pavilion and the wall.

This design of A chair arises from the duality between, on the one hand, a metallic bearing structure with square profile and orthogonal geometries that confer stability to the piece, and on the other a natural wood carcass with an organic geometry that gives comfort to people when come into contact with it, and ergonomics the piece.
Maybe, sitting down touching wood brings good luck.

New completed project | Showroom for Petra The Stone Atelier

Petra The Stone Atelier is an space in which three activities live together. On the one hand, it is an exhibition space for the company Stonehegen that shows stones from all over the world. The British cromlech that inspired the company serves as reference to trace the geometry of the place. A circular furniture inside which we can discover the different natural stones. In this way, the numerous shades of marble, quartzite… are not contaminated between them and can focus attention on the material that is observed. The space is apparently empty, neutral, white, where you can find hidden stones, some of them semiprecious.

Competitions | Campus Zumex Group

The proposal for Zumex Group headquarters in Paterna design and construction competition has been selected finalist.

The project is drawn by two connected elements that distribute the program between offices and manufacturing area.

The corporate part stands out for its slender proportion that allows it to have the maximum perimeter of contact with the outside, favoring the habitability of the workplace, which acquires optimum comfort conditions and a perception of the views offered by the elevated position of the site. In the interior appear open and communicated spaces, both horizontally and vertically, bounded only by meeting rooms. Special attention is given to the operation of the circulation system, enhancing the visitor’s experience and favoring the life of the users.

The manufacturing part is drawn compactly, which makes it more efficient for its use and maximizes the use of available space. It is projected as a large open space, flexible, with capacity to expand and adapt to future configurations.

New completed project | Guest pavilion

The project with a surface area of around 70 square meters is a guest pavilion that functions as an autonomous architecture conceived as an extension of a project that we had developed in the studio. The human scale of the pavilion makes it a comfortable space where to experience living in a garden.

New project | Customer services offices

The project consists in the implementation of customer service offices. They are located in a commercial premise in the centre of the city with a complex geometry, full of turns and structural elements that interfere in the understanding of the space.

In order to organize the interior space and make its functioning effective, the turns are regularised by linked orthogonal geometries. Every one of the regular spaces are assigned to a different part of the programme. Each regular room is defined and distinguished from the contiguous rooms by the use of different tonalities, which go from white to different shades of gray. The ceilings are thus turned into a sort of signage that defines the various uses. The indirect lighting placed in the ceiling reinforces this idea and allowes the use of light fixtures whose length provides service to every workspace. The activity is concentrated in the first two meters of height. The office is organized and disorganized with the daily work, while the ceiling remains always ordered.
